How to Care for Nambu Ironware Over Time
Nambu ironware is designed to last for generations when used properly.
It is not completed at the moment it leaves the workshop, but gradually shaped by the hands of its owner over time.
This guide outlines only the essential practices needed to support that process.
1. Before First Use
When using a new iron kettle for the first time, a simple preparation is recommended.
Rinse the interior lightly with water.
Fill the kettle to about seventy percent capacity, bring the water to a boil, and discard it.
Repeat this process two to three times.
This helps stabilize the interior and prepares the kettle for daily use.
2. Daily Use Basics
For Nambu ironware, regular use is the best form of care.
After use, always empty the kettle completely.
While it is still warm, remove the lid and allow any remaining moisture inside to evaporate naturally.
Do not touch or scrub the interior.
Detergents or brushes are unnecessary and should be avoided.
Over time, a natural protective layer forms inside the kettle.
The exterior may be wiped lightly with a well-wrung cloth if needed.
Doing so while the kettle retains warmth helps maintain the finish.
3. Allowing “Yuaka” to Develop
With continued use, a thin white layer may appear inside the kettle.
This is known as “yuaka,” formed from minerals in the water.
Yuaka helps protect the interior and softens the character of the water.
It should not be removed.
As it develops, the kettle becomes more stable and refined as a tool.
Nambu ironware is often described as an object that its owner completes over time.
Yuaka represents that quiet accumulation of use.
4. Living with Rust
In Nambu ironware, rust is not always a problem to be eliminated, but a condition to be understood.
Small reddish spots may appear in the early stages of use.
If the water remains clear, there is no issue. Continue using the kettle as usual.
If the water becomes discolored or develops a strong metallic taste, it may be necessary to pause use and restore balance through traditional methods, such as boiling tea leaves.

Consistent use, restraint, and patience are what allow it to endure for a lifetime.
